According to the council member's representative, plans may be on hold due to the economy.

WalkHPNA

December 20, 2008 by stevenl

Hello

I just got back from walking the boundaries of HPNA. It took about an hour - at night, your mileage may vary.
I'd recommend trying it sometime, to really get an idea of what our neighborhood is like from ground level.

My rough calculations:
2.76 miles ( so avg speed 2.76 miles an hour :)
area of the neighborhood: about .31 square miles.

Fresh & Easy

The appeal to allow the Fresh & Easy conditional use permit passed last Tuesday at the city council.

Post any other news about this here.

Re: Door to door solicitors

I caught up with the guy (in the midst of a sale). He said that he's had people receive magazines and that there are some out there who are scamming but not him.

Some good advice here - don't give the folks your number, but if you read it to the phone, at least you have a phone # responsible for the sale.

Now, a scam could be using the name of a legit organization. So these folks COULD be legit.

Or not.

Re: Door to door solicitors

Folks,
This evening, a guy was by who was in some fundraiser for "tower of power", a "publication drive" that is trying to net him some trip to Rome.   I should have taken the material so that I have more details, but I told him no thank you when he said that yes, it was a solicitation.   He said, "There will be more people coming by".

I ran after him later to get the company name, and told him that we are in a neighborhood organization that likes to know who is in our area.

If anyone sees them, perhaps get some more information.

Are you the person who decides when we can laugh and when we can not? Man I have been looking for you all my life. Please where and what time can I laugh?

-guest

Actually, DO go ahead and laugh when you are hiding in back of someone else's property late at night. It will make it easier to spot you ahead of time, so we will know where to expect graffiti, beer bottles, and other trash.

I won't pay anyone anything on the spot (sometimes the people who paint the numbers.. if they actually paint it. ). We ask them if they have any literature they can leave or to send somethiing, often they do not. They want to make the sale right there.

I wonder if it would help to say, 'some of our neighbors were discussing groups like you.. know that we're concerned about these kind of sales in the neighborhood and are watching you'? maybe that's too threatening.

Can you define traffic calming? What does it involve, what are the implications?

I would think you could just say, 'lightpoles in the neighborhood'. Thanks for confirming the number, i've added it on my cell.

Graffiti

June 2, 2008 by stevenl

I heard (but didn't see) that there were reports of fresh graffiti towards Payne. I'll be taking a look and calling the hotline. How are other areas doing?

May 31st - Tree Planting Day?

June 2, 2008 by stevenl

Hello,
I think the Tree Planting Day was this last Saturday. Can anyone give a report on it?

Crime, and being alert

May 12, 2008 by stevenl

I've been trying to be out

in

the neighborhood more, on foot and by car. Hopefully I won't appear to be a suspicious person myself. I am trying to become more familiar with things, to be able to see what's out of place.

This evening (11pm) there was laughter coming from behind the walgreens. I called the police to take a look. It's not the right time or place for laughter.

I went to the Holders Country Inn, http://www.holderscountryinn.com/ - I don't know if 'diner-style' is a good way to put it, I would say Family Style. It's a family restaurant (for 51 years) and the food was good, and the staff fairly attentive, even very near closing time. It might be a good place to reach out to as far as community involvement, being so centrally located. It might make a good meeting place for small commitees, etc.Seems to be open 6:30a-9:30p

Local Businesses - Restaurants

May 11, 2008 by stevenl

Hello,
It was discussed at the last meeting about getting and keeping good local businesses. I thought it might be good to start a thread to discuss and promote local folks. Keep it local, very local! I'm including some businesses that might be slightly outside of the immediate HPNA area. but certainly, those actually inside would be preferable- especially because they might become members!

Non-disclaimer: I have no financial interest in any of these, other than as a local resident!

Here are some comments on local restaurants:

* (DD's Discount Area)

China Chef / Chef China - I don't have the takeout menu for this, but it has been good before. You can eat in or take out. Friendly staff. I liked their eggplant dish. I think it changed ownership a few years ago, it has been good both before and after the change. 1310 Saratoga Ave (408) 984-3440
Zeni - Ethiopian. I haven't tried this, others have enjoyed it. Seems to be a unique experience. 1320 Saratoga Ave (408) 615-8282
Tanto Japanese -I haven't tried this. 1306 Saratoga Ave (408) 249-6020
Carl's Jr - Drive-through open till 1am. Now a Green Burrito also.

* (Westgate Mall)
There are a number of chain stores here: Johnny Rockets (retro diner), Fresh Choice (salad style buffet), Hometown Buffet (cafe style buffet), and probably a few others.

* Near 7-11/Calico Corners
There's always 7-11.. a quick bite on the road, at all hours… our favorite stop when beginning a day trip or a long road trip.
There's a diner-style restaurant here as well, but I'm not familiar with it. My brother has gone there some.

* (The following are all in the Maple Leaf Plaza area just north of the HPNA region along Saratoga) - OUTSIDE

Phở Noodle House Long Thịnh Restaurant - 1080 Saratoga Ave. #12, San Jose 95129, (408) 244-4670 (408)243-7113
Good Phở (Vietnamese) place, only went once so far (today). I ordered a Hot and Spicy special, and was warned about it being very fishy. I enjoy that kind of food, so I ordered it anyways. They also have a selection of beverages, and snow bubble/pearl smoothies.

Gloria's Burritos 1142 Saratoga Ave. 408-984-6086. They have an excellent Chicken Molé. They do take-out.

D'Amatos Philly Cheese Steak. You can locate this by the 'Philadelphia Eagles' truck parked out front. Excellent cheese steaks, huge portions. Seems to be a favorite of our local public services (it's not far from the fire station, for one thing).

Yas Restaurant. Persian (Iranian) food. My Persian coworkers used to like this, so that's a good endorsement.

* (Just East of the SE corner of HPNA) - OUTSIDE
Chaltecho [sp?] #2 Taqueria - past the Stop N' Go. A Hispanic friend recommended it, so that's a good recommendation. I haven't been there in a while, but they had a good breakfast, if I remember right.

Re: Area traffic

May 7, 2008 by stevenl

When you come out on the 'other' southwood turning onto Payne (letter 'A') you often can't see oncoming traffic ( <<<< ) because of cars, sometimes large vans, parked at the corner, marked out in red.

It would be great if it was actually painted in red, so that no-one would park there. Supposedly, many employees of the post office park in that area due to a lack of parking.
